Do You Remember Your First Love

Do you remember your first love—
How softly the world grew wide?
How long did it last in the chambers of youth,
Where hope had not yet learned to hide?

Are you still with them in the quiet hours,
When memory breathes like rain?
Or did time, with its wandering hands,
Teach the heart a gentler pain?

You taught me to love you—thus,
By watching your shadow move,
By learning the courage in your voice,
I learned the grammar of love.

The bushes and trees are everywhere now,
As they were then, standing true;
Even the leaves stayed green that year,
As if the earth believed in you.

And still, when the wind goes passing by,
Through branch and silent sky,
I feel the echo of what we were—
A first love that will never die.
