Do You Know what School Counselors Do

I had been volunteering twenty-eight hours a week in a middle school
Tutoring children, and I loved it
What I was doing for free was listed as a paying position
I applied for it but someone else received it
I was heart broken

Then I remembered the guidance counselor pulling me into his office
He asked me if I knew what counselors do
I guessed “boring paperwork?”
He smiled and said “we are supposed to do what you do.”
He told me to go back to school and get a degree in counseling.

Because I had a broken heart, when they hired someone else
I went back to school
I was a guidance counselor for almost thirty years
It was a job that was never boring.
