Distant Shore
There is a distant shore with sand of new-snowfall white.
It lies beyond mountains and valleys, deserts and plain.
A blue-water lagoon with water clear as morning light
Is a shimmering jewel in this place where angels reign.
It's too perfect for mortals to see, but it's real I swear,
For as a boy I heard elders talk of the"distant shore."
I thought one day we'd take a family vacation there.
As a man, I still believe we will but it'll be much more.
At Aunt Mae's funeral I first grasped the words' intent.
One speaker said we'd meet her on the "distant shore."
He was speaking of heaven, was the message he sent.
Why, I asked myself, didn't I perceive that before?
Our knowledge of heaven is scant; much is concealed.
Will we be in a choir, all in white? We long to learn more.
Devout thinkers close to God confess little is revealed.
But I like to believe it will be much like the distant shore.
