Notes About The Poem

A Companion Poem "For Lack of Listening"

============

DISRUPTION: A Child Speaks

I said "I was just trying to be heard."
but the grown-ups were scheduling the next meeting about meetings
and the stillness was louder than me.

I said "I saw the cracks before the walls fell."
but they called it anxiety
pressed a pill into my palm—a bitter bead to bolt the mouth—
traded my bike for a screen.

I said "I asked what happens when the warnings all come true."
but they gave me the word catastrophizing
and sent me to talk to someone who would teach me to cope.

I said "I need something—God, or anything bigger than this ungodly."
but they said they'd outgrown that
they said the universe runs on chaos
hope—a feathered fraud—
they said forgetting was the price of growing.

I said "I dreamed of a world that listened first."
but the world was scrolling
and the scroll had no bottom
and the bottom had no floor.

I am still trying to be heard
the grown-ups are still busy
the world is still scrolling.

and I am learning
that no one is coming
that rescue is a story, fantasy, myth
that survival is action, not a noun—
I teach myself
in the darklessness—where angels file complaints.

while the adults
argue the wording
of the warning
no one
will ever
read.

§ FINAL VOLTA

But even in the dawn
I feel the stillness shiver—

a warning

the world

still refuses to hear

an acorn
hits my head—

the forest still believes
in warning
even when we don't

Daniel, you did a great job capturing the voice of a child. I love the line, "I dreamed of a world that listened first." Then the volta added so much more meaning. You said the sky is falling without saying the sky is falling, and who would listen?

another fascinating poem, hmm, it seems labeling something (e.g., catastrophizing) can be misunderstood to be addressing it.

Hello David, I think part of the issue could be that in psychology we came up with all kinds of labels. I try to be less about labeling and more about what the client needs and how can I help. Autumn Blessings, David, Daniel

Dearest Daniel, I can relate to the child and I was always unheard. As a 20 year old adult when I get flashbacks of my childhood I realise that it was my childhood self who needed attention. Maybe if I had gotten attention and love, I would have been a normal human being instead of being depressed all the time. Your poems always make way to my heart. With love and respect always, Anne

Dearest Anne, I am sorry you have been through this kind of childhood; every child deserves to be listened to and loved. I have had my own issues with my own childhood abuse. However, I know there is always hope, and we find it in those with an honest heart. I am so grateful for you, and I pray and hope that you will see friends and things that will fill your soul beyond measure. Autumn Blessings, My Dear Anne, Daniel.

Listen, look - so important. Sometimes you can’t see until the acorn drops. Then one should give attention, one must. Some don’t, sadly. Interesting though how especially in early adulthood something could be seen as that is just the way they are, but after the ball drops and you once again see the softness, you realize how jaded the person hd become. Introverts especially!

Dear Kim, rarly adulthood can harden us, how we mistake defense for identity, and how, if we’re lucky, we catch a glimpse of the softness that remains. Especially in introverts, that shift is profound. Thank you for holding space. I wait for one day when our Lord returns. Autumn Blessings, Dear Kim, Daniel

Analytical thematics of unheard auguries, clears generational, and the quest for exact essence. Structurally, repetitive contrary insights with the tepid or calming replies of adults, culminating in a notable shift, as a consequential resolve. Hence, the silencing of a child’s dire portents by adults. A profound turn in perspective, finality: While rescue is a myth, the potential for survival, growth, and natural truth remains—with a boy, amidst the woods, lost from his view, a sole comfort.

Hello HP, Your reading felt like a kind of rescue in itself, one that doesn’t deny the myth but honors the intentionality beneath it. You didn’t just interpret, you witnessed. Thank you for meeting the poem where it lives. Autumn Blessings, HP, Daniel

Dear Paula, I appreciate your thoughts and visit. Many young adults that I see in counseling have the same message. I wished my parents would have... . We, as adults, are responsible for helping the generations behind us and for those who will one day inherit the earth — or what is left. Autumn Blessings, Dear Paula, Daniel

- Adults often choose the easy solutions instead of listening ... especially to the children - A deeply meaningful poem, Daniel - Excellently written as always, my friend :) -hugs

Dear Anne-Lise, Thank you, and yes, the adults will often choose the easy solution, including putting the child in front of a screen, rather than interacting with that child when they should. Autumn Blessings, Dear Anne-Lise, Daniel
