Discontinue the Penny
Discontinue the Penny
By Elton Camp
When mention of discontinuing the penny we make,
Many people look with horror and shiver and shake
But here’s an economic fact not known by very many
It costs a penny and a half to produce just one penny
And to get anything for a penny you needn’t even try
There’s not a single item that a penny will still buy
They have so little value they are left on the ground
You will see them about everywhere if you look around
Purchases to the nearest nickel would then be rounded
Studies show gripes about a “rounding tax” are unfounded
Some prices would be rounded up, others would decrease
So this is a bogus argument that really ought to cease
In 1857 when the half-penny was, at last, dropped out
Nobody then even cared and there wasn’t any shout
So there is actually not a sound reason on this earth
To continue a coin that has the penny’s little worth
