Did I Teach You Love

I remember once you told me
you had not known love before --
you had never known the feeling
of wanting to know more
about how lonely people
had no one to take care of.
Now I sometimes wonder --
Did I teach you love?

Did you learn how empty hearts
can soon be filled with care
for someone else who comes along
and suddenly finds them there.
Did you learn how two hearts,
with just a little shove,
can find they are inseparable?
Did I teach you love?

When unexpected troubles
cause a love to fade,
can forgiveness intervene
when hurting words are said?
As a lovers' moon rises high
to touch the stars above --
Will you tell me, honestly --
Did I teach you love?
