DESCENT AND ASCENT

DESCENT AND ASCENT Down here amongst the mud and weeds Now I know where disappointment leads All life’s chances are as a string of beads And if explored or ignored, one by one Whether cold ice or warmth of the sun Each leads us to take a step up or down Down is an easier path that one can take A simple choice that all might just make The outcome looks tempting, yet is fake A descent into what appears to be good But in reality, is a watery neighbourhood Down here, cold and lost in the darkness Up is ever the greater challenge it seems As an act of faith among various themes Yet always more than the stuff of dreams Finally reaching that tall mountain peak So beautiful a view one can hardly speak Grateful for the selection that was made It is said each bead connects to the next Bad decisions do leave one feeling vexed But good guidance can be found in text Yet even if one has started their descent There will be a choice at the next event So up or down, just try to enjoy the ride

Dear Howard, I adore your metaphor of life events and choices being compared to a string of beads, as "each bead connects to the next". Also the wisdom of "Bad decisions do leave one feeling vexed/But good guidance can be found in text" Wonderful rhymes throughout your profound verse. A beautiful expression of the duality of descent and ascent. Congratulations for your success in Seeker's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan
