Depth

You have a certain depth I cannot gauge.
Even after the flight of years it eludes me.
Defining it would dare the wisest sage,
Thus I struggle to know what it might be.

I’m given to think it doesn’t stand alone
But is a combination of salutary features.
Your hair and eyes are a modest part of it,
Differing to a degree from other creatures.

Could it be your manner, your inner being—
The essence that makes you purely unique?
It was formed in a time long past our seeing
Of which we know so little we deign to speak.

But we were with the Father and the Son,
And we had agency there to test our worth.
It was there I think your depth was spun
Unknown ages before your mortal birth.
