Having read this I was intrigued enough to find out more about Delmore. I read "The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me" a brilliant poem in which the poet seems at odds with his body and his mind; possibly as a result of his mental health issues or his insecurities. Thanks for posting Elizabeth. I'm a convert. Cheers - Gary

Thank you for the note, Andrea. I had only recently found Delmore and was anxious to have everybody have a look! His choice of words is always simple but profound. Elizabeth

This is the way it goes. I do not think this is quaint. "Schwartz died of a heart attack in the Columbia Hotel. For three days no one came to claim his body. His friends, who reported that Schwartz had dropped out of sight for a year prior to his death, learned of his death by reading the obituaries."

I have never read this poet. Thank you Mme McCann. These three, "Chaplin Upon the Cliff Dining Alone";"At a Solemn Musick"; "Narcissus"... this poet is prolific in mind, all of his poems, read tonight, but more than likely, raised eyebrows and turned backs in his early writings. I note with elation he did win a prestigous writing prize and had books published. When you get down to the roots of it all, it's not about the competition. It's about the giving (of oneself, which is a huge risk, when further thought is given). It's all a club when you get down to the baseline. Politics and lobbying. Publishing. His thoughts from mind (and higher self) produced such beautiful poetry. Sublime yet surreal. The reality is his demise. This is very sad, yet oh so very real. Thank you for the direction poet McCann and thank you with respect, poet Delmore Schwartz.

This - "Ashbery noted that, “the circumstances of Delmore’s childhood and later life would be continually recalled in his writing, which is, in a sense, one vast mythification of himself and his family.” Schwartz’s dense, even nightmarish, idioms and topographies drew comparisons to Rimbaud and Baudelaire". xx

Ah, Victor, sometimes one must be absurd to seize and direct the attention. Elizabeth

Thanks, Gersh! A personal choice, I guess. (But then, nobody else really is Gershon either!) Elizabeth

My curiosity was piqued. After reading a couple of Delmore's poems, all my adrenaline had leaked. (Hmm. I'm no Delmore Schwartz, am I?).
