Notes About The Poem

Degrees

It grows night by degrees
Shades of twilight lengthening
Shadows of trees.
All shaped by that which fate decrees.
Some sad story. Some glad story.
All the same by fate are shaped,
The people in them merely draped
In that which most becomes the scene.
Life sometimes, another’s dream.
The passion of a kiss,
A hand that reaches out to save,
Sometimes will miss.
And slowly by degrees the day returns,
The sunlight burns. Creatures stir
To move the props. Some unseen force
Directing plots. We arrive to play our parts.
Joyous voices, broken hearts.
It matters not. It all remains.
Time moves on to focus
On another lot
And the dust gathers,
By degrees.
