Deer Hunter
Up before the sun,
Washing away every scent,
Quietly, I slip out the door.
Through the dew, up the ladder,
Sit down, settle in,
Await for light to rise,
Rebirth of land.
A footstep, an acorn dropping,
Land so quiet.
A falling leaf brings on a thunderous roar.
A gentle breeze scatters leaves,
Squirrels chatter here and there.
A step? A snort?
Straining to see through the green.
Yes! Antlers, broad and strong.
Slowly, I stand up.
Eyes on the prize,
Draw the string,
Wait, aim, wait,
Shaking with excitement.
Breathing fast and short.
Release.
A resounding thud rings out.
He falls, staggers, and runs
Then crashes at death's door.
The last breath hissing free,
Blood bubbling at his lips
Death rattle ceases
I thank the Lord
For a bountiful feast.
