Dawn Play

DAWN PLAY

Into the warm sunrise of morning
Out of the dawn’s dark trees
Two seagulls rise with ease.
Silhouetted in the clear dawning.

At the partner’s signal, both move as one
Effortless, silent, light
They wheel over the road out of sight
Graceful wings in unison,

In my car, I fly in communion:
For a moment now, we soar.
The traffic resumes its roar;
But for them there is no confusion.

Which leads - I cannot say:
One larger, one smaller,
One leader, one follower.
As one, a pair at play.

Driving one morning near a hedge, a pair of these
birds burst out of the foliage and flew just above
my moving car in the traffic stream and kept pace
for about 50 metres, then wheeled away, as if both
were guided by a single command. The children
and I were impressed by the sight.
