Dave

Listen to poem:
Dave Everyone needs a Dave. He checks how you are.. He's the one who sees beauty Through your feathers and tar As a friend he is priceless. As much gold as Fort Knox.. He can see your potential Lifts that hasp off your box His message is freedom. His message is love.. And he'll throw up a good word To the throne room above And the thing about Dave is.. He is gentle and kindly But when it comes to The Fight He's right there behind me So we all need a Dave. That friend who is faithful.. To encourage our journey When life's more than a handful For a calm thoughtful spirit. For that uplifting tone.. Friendly words that remind; We are never alone Our Dave is all wisdom. In his guidance we trust. But there's a thing to accept And remember, we must.. To be someone's Dave There's a reason he blesses.. It's the fire that smelts All that metal so precious Every Dave has a story. You can see through those eyes It's the forge that has shaped A demeanour so wise Persistence in struggle. Hope in adversity. Becoming a student In life's university So, wherever you serve Be you Doris or Dave My cap I will doff. To be like you, I crave For you carry the Spirit, So clearly we see. And a gift to unshackle Those who long to be free. So let's be more Dave. Blessing off someone's socks For the world needs more like him And let's face it, he rocks. Jinjagoliath 30th May 2021

As I read it , I was thinking of David vs Goliath and realized, oh, Dave is short for David. i guess there is just something about that name. yes, it would sure be awesome to have someone like this in one's corner. very nicely rhymed!

Andrea - thanks and you are so right. I had not spotted the David and Goliath connection and strangely it works when read with that lens! How clever of you!! Many years ago I walked on stilts in African villages & schools to tell that very story (many times).. so I am very familiar with it x

When I wrote this - the very first line was a quote from my Wife. She knows a Dave and although this was inspired by him, I realised that there is a Dave or Doris in everyone's life, and if you come across someone who doesn't have that wonderful person who cares (often at their own expense) and is kindly and generous with their time, perhaps that Doris or Dave could be you. Or me. Wouldn't the world be a wonderful, heavenly place? x
