Darkness Is Coming

The darkness always comes....

Relentlessly and inevitably,
like an army marching forward
to the pounding of drums

The fear always comes.....

Stuttering and stammering,
I cower from words that strike
like blows from a hammer

The panic always comes....

Paralyzing and suffocating,
there's no escape, no protection
only pleading and placating

The pain always comes....

Surely, swiftly and cruel,
it cuts through to my soul
for the darkness needs its fuel

The shame always comes....

Snarling and sneering,
uttering terrible words
that I'm alone hearing

The darkness always comes....
