Dark the Night

The night wind moans,
A sighing groan,
Filled with misery and woe.

      Dark is death,
      A heartless plague,
      Steals my breath,
      My vision fades.

The night birds shriek,
A cawing bleak,
To reap the life I sowed.

     Dark the shadows,
     Dim the light,
     Hard my pillow
     Gone is flight.

The night is black,
A soul I lack,
Stolen by a foe,

     Dark the grave,
     Cold the earth,
     A promise gave,
     No new birth.
