Dark Necessities
I must obey my dark necessities.
So, I cloak and dagger.
duck and dive, cover and cower.
over troubled tides and certain danger
I lace my shoes tight.
and slip, silent, down the shadowed street
seeking an open door spilling steam and heat
Here is where they find gods in neon lights.
and in the corners of alleys there are intersections of momentary distraction
My shoes drift over cobblestone and crushed pebbles as I run into his location
a boarding house for dispatches from the wild, where sunsets are the colour of mimosas and beaches contain all the sands of memory.
up the fire escape stairs
corrugated, creaking, crusted with rust
clanging under me
I just need to see him.
this everlasting rebel of the normal
A skylark aglow in the red lights
like a fever has come over his body
a blushing of momentous occasion
an enthusiastic embrace of everything primal
a scream to a sigh
They say the end is nigh.
I throw my chucks over a power line where they snag and swing.
nevermore shall I pass away.
eternal—our words are woven eternal.
And safe haven is where my eyes
land on your body
and I can take it all in
and I can wrap myself inside.
take off my bomber jacket.
and remain a while.
The last sigh
The last beseech.
of empty sky
and the end of all Goodbyes
and in the morning light
those sneakers still swing from their perch.
and I smell toast.
slightly singed, but stirred with soul
and I smile.
with my eyes
because I know I am home
