DANCING FOOTPRINTS
Many years ago when I was but a child…
as I walked alone in the woods through the snow and the frost
although I was somewhere near my home I got turned around…and realized I was lost.
I didn’t know which way to go…didn’t recognize the view….
and as I stood there wondering where I was…I was unsure what to do.
The trees I had walked by many times…who I thought were my friends before…
did not look the same to me…I didn’t feel I could trust them anymore…
I decided to keep walking…although I was filled with sadness and doubt…
hoping sooner or later…if I kept going…I’d discover a way out.
Which I did…and when I did I felt elated…I felt relief and joy…because…
even though I was far from home…I now knew exactly where I was.
I remember being overjoyed and as I headed home…I wasn’t walking…I was prancing
If someone came upon the footprints I left behind…they’d think that I was dancing.
As I look at the direction our country is taking…and I sadly think of the cost…
I again feel like I did that day in the woods…that in terms of this country…I am lost..
This time although I am not sure which way to turn…not sure what’s happening to me
I know I’m not alone because I have many friends who feel like me…
But there are other people I thought were my friends..who were my friends before
who do not look the same as me…and we don’t trust each other anymore.
But I will keep on walking…although I’m filled with sadness, heartache and doubt…
hoping sooner or later our country comes to its senses…and we discover a way out.
I look forward to that day…the day when we can see
we are back to being the country most of us think we were meant to be.
To the day the majority of people will be so elated…
we won’t just be walking…we’ll be prancing…
and the rest of the world once they see our footsteps
will smile again…
when they realize we’re all dancing.
