Daddy Issues

my mom first brought you home
I was probably about 8 yrs old
I thought I was getting a new dad
back when hope was all I had

you were charming and sweet
even bought me cookies to eat
I didn’t know your intention
was to give me more than attention

my mom was almost never home
she couldn’t have ever known
what you were about to do to me
so here it is, my dark journey

“you’re so cute I wanna marry you”
I really didn’t think this through
that a grown man said this to a little child
my mom knew this and that’s what’s wild

one day we were home alone
back in the age of Nokia phones
you were standing by the back door
you unzipped your pants and showed me more

more than I ever wanted to see
my innocent eyes, I wanted to flee
without a word, you zipped it back up
I stood as fragile as a teacup

it escalated to touching my bra
my emotions never felt so raw
but what was coming was far worse
never experienced something so perverse

you said when I turned 15 you wanted me
to leave my mom’s so that we could be
together alone and I wasn’t scared
I wanted to go away somewhere

I never felt so much confusion
my mom was the bad guy in my delusion
she yelled and hit me since I was small
and that’s why I started to put up a wall

I thought you were the good guy, you see
sometimes you’d fend her off when I’d get beat
I thought it was good old fatherly love
to protect me when push came to shove

one day, again, we were home alone
this day in particular chilled me to the bone
you laid me down on the sheets
you pulled my pants down to my feet

I can’t say what happened next
but I won’t leave you too perplexed
I learned a new meaning to the word ‘oral’
and I felt like I Iost all my morals

9 years old, I saw the other side of darkness
my mother looked at me with such sharpness
two malevolent forces in one house
And through it all I was quiet as a mouse

I could’ve told anyone what was going on
but I had such a loyalty to my own mom
and fiercer loyalty to someone called ‘dad’
that word is the worst I hate it so bad

I melt into my chair thinking these things
even though I’m numb it still really stings
I never ever said these words aloud
but here it is, here is my vow

I’ll never be blind again to these red flags
because my experience is all I have
I’m sorry if reading this was too hard
I just wanted to show you my scars
