Crusader
hammered anvil dark heavy with silver beaten head
cooled now after the silver sword
with steaming sizzle and hiss
met with the cold water’s kiss
hardened, sharpened, beaten but undefeated
ready for battle, eager to be wielded
by strengthened and well-trained arm
into battle, in to battle, kill and harm
defending, attacking, parrying, flying
singing sword rings the bell of armored plate
cleaving helmets, shields and pate
victory, victorious, overcomer
champion of battle, honors
celebrate
cheer
the enemy defeated
hear ye, hear ye, hear ye, hear!
the enemy from far was defeated so near
and as the sword to anvil returns
and as the fire stoked so brightly burns
the blood and memory is washed away
to be sharpened, honed,
to fight another day
