Counterterrorism

The cops with "Counterterrorism"
Splayed upon their vests
Alert us to the fact that they're
All set to make arrests.

They eyeball every passenger
In search of someone who
May secretly be plotting
To cause harm to me or you.

At one time I was comforted
By having them around,
Believing that their presence
Helped to keep us safe and sound.

But now it's more unnerving,
Like the sighting of a fungus,
For it makes me wonder if there is
A terrorist among us.

Having armed police and soldiers on parade is supposed to put our minds at rest, but in the long run it becomes counter productive. Your poem makes a lot of sense, Ilene. How I long for my childhood years when life was less harassing. Regards // paul

It really is a shame all the bad guys don't wear black hats so we could distinguish the bad from the good and walk on the other side of the street. C'est la vie! But how else shall we encourage children to watch their surroundings instead of their iPhone? Aloha! Rico

We need to be wary always. It is a sad state.
