When grandad finds the crows only ate
A tenth of his garden’s peas, down to the stem .
Wife, fixing dress of last year’s date
With a new fancy hem.

Baby, well-fed and pants dry.
Cat, straight on knee when you get in.
Dad, getting to work on time with a sigh
Just doing his job, trying to win.

Oh, it’s easy if born in a stable in Bethlehem;
But we could all be like them,
Or like like Abu Ben Adhem : *

Found he wasn’t on the “love the Lord” list:
Said, ok  -  so that’s one I missed. . . .
Just put me down on the “fellow man” list.

It’s a recognition that life is not ideal,
But it’s the best you can make it feel -
And that’s enough. . . . that’s real.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
