Notes About The Poem

Jewish New Year 5787 - 'Rosh Hashana' - begins at or before sunset this Friday, Sept. 11.

Connection or Rejection

The unique bleat of the ram’s horn (shofar) draws the crowds
like the wailing at the Temple’s western wall, its symbolism plays loud

Yet it is not the essence of the Jewish New Year
        which is belonging –
to his own people, one must first connect
And if he will not, God too he will come to reject

Hello Gershon, I like how you use the loud, dramatic stuff, the shofar and the Western Wall. just to pivot and say, "Look, that's not actually the real point." That shift into the idea that you can't really connect with the divine if you're actively cutting yourself off from your own community is a strong, challenging thought. What I love is that your poem is concise, sharp, and gives you something real to chew on. Blessings, Daniel

Gershon, I did not know the date of the Jewish New Year, but I knew it was different than the one in America. I hope you have a nice New Year. What do you do to celebrate? 👏✍️. Sara K.

Jewish New Year / Rosh Hashana is a true Holy Day. So it's not exactly a celebration or festival like Passover is. Thanks for the interest in this, and here's to good news from your end, Sara. :) gw
