complacency brought us here

for-A Draconian State Poetry Contest-Sponsored by: Sara Jama
-------------------------

out into the midnight hour i was trudged-
silent eyes watched as i was bludged-
as i sat bloody and bruised-
i listen to what i was accused.

every week a new rule they would create-
with our freedoms removed there was no debate.
i was angry that a government could dictate-
so here iam deemed-as an enemy of the state.

the minds thoughts remained true and sane-
but my body is broken and racked with pain.
inside i still kept a burning flame-
its the strain on society-thats to blame.

what started as ignorance and many lies-
the strings were pulled by a hundred eyes.
to make sure all bowed to the narrative line-
making eyes shut tight-and totally blind.

on the path we carefully must tread-
as we are easy prey-to the misled.
it becomes friend turning on friend-
in this paradise lost-the now trend.

for so long there was complacency-
with the blood strained hands of society.
the rivers waters flowed dark with anxiety-
and we lived with a wide divide and impropriety.

judgements made from pedestals way up high-
In this system-twisted and awry.
if their narrative you dare go against-
they turned to anger-rage-become incensed.

and now i sit in this cell awaiting my fate-
think-after everything ive given to this state.
i now live with a tortured body and mind-
in this place devoid of the sun-and shine.

i do not fear my awaiting pain-
as i have freedom pumping inside my veins.
my heart is true while my body is bound in chains-
so i close my eyes to block the reins-of their shame.
