come hold the baby

the front yard is full of pilgrims and pumpkins
there is a jack-o-lantern discarded in nearby ditch I bet
I used to live here, I know what happens in between holidays
are they looking out the window for me?
I am disappointed no one runs out

I understand why when I open the door
a new grandbaby is planted on their knees
they are fighting over her
They look up and Mom says “take a number”
Dad lifts the baby to his shoulder, taking advantage

My parents love children
Thanksgiving is only one excuse to lure us home
I smell pumpkin, cinnamon and sage
there is nothing like a homemade meal at my mothers
candles around the table remind me of my grandmother
she did not think you could have a meal without candles

This is our first holiday without her
I look at the chair where she used to sit
who is taking her chair?
Will I be able to stand it?
Come hold the baby says my sister
The last thing I wanted to do
