"Cœur de Lion"
what makes a hero?
the hero heart
doesn’t beat
it roars,
calling in all
the shrouds
ears and eyes open
eventually,
they all hear
the call
what makes a hero?
today, you may be,
but maybe not, tomorrow
what of tomorrow?
the child inside
queries adult quandary
fear faced front on
more than words
read and spoken
the voice of the inner
child speaks,
the adult listens
12 seconds to midnight
the body confronted
the soul lifted
the reconciliation
with self, now wafer thin
a lifetime’s token handed in
“no more pain,”
Cœur de Lion instructs,
“Love turns it back on war,
Love turns its back,
Love turns away,
come child
eyes on me,
always,
this way”
trauma confounded
embraced, Love wins
Truth, this way
no winners
in wars
all discover this
in the end
of their days;
what makes a hero?
Resolution
letting loose of
all that time took away
“no more pain,”
Coeur de Lion instructs,
“Love turns away
from what shrouds
preach best,
no one better, nor best,
there is no victory
in wars, the games
men like gods play,
spitting bullets and bombs
like verbose vitriol
their blood as ink, seered
into pages burning
turning over
like sleeping white flags,
dissolving to lucid dreams,
far too late;
all discover this
in their own time, all
semicolons marked as
unsung heroes
far too late, the music
arrives, by the heard
in the end
of their
story book days
heroes
unseen,
and seen
to be sung
and
to be heard
