I wrote this after visiting an orphanage, 'Clouds Of Hope,' in Underberg South Africa where 72 children lived and were looked after when both their parents had died of HIV/AIDS. I asked the connection between clouds and hope as in the UK clouds can be seen as dark, threatening and rather gloomy but of course in South Africa, in drought conditions, the towering storm clouds mean that rain is imminent. That brings hope of renewal and survival.
A child needs to know someone is caring,
That with them their love and time they’re sharing,
Teaching them, helping them freedom to find,
By feeding both their body and their mind.
Dark shadows the face of the future hides
When despair with happiness meets, collides,
Belief is the path, education’s the key,
That will lead to truth and equality.
A child needs support, a reason to live.
People need to be given chances to give,
To Nurture, give a child life skills to cope,
That is the vision that is ‘Clouds of Hope.’
