Clean Slate

On that barstool, a San Miguel in my hand,
Looking at your picture, how you used to stand.
A jealous heart whispers, "She ain’t worth a dime,"
Words like daggers, but no one sees the crime.
My anger for your laughter, tore my soul that night.
But then your husband returned and stole the light.

Oh, I laughed in this world, or I’d have lost my mind,
But sometimes those words, they cut deep and blind.
You’ll learn someday, old friend, it’s a cold, hard fate,
A coffin costs less than love lost, let’s clean this slate.

I kicked at the dust where your heart used to lay,
Kicking a dying man, wasn't nice, I’d say.
But first, I just wanted to watch him fall down,
No risk in his silence, just the talk of the town.
I took out the trash to clear out my space,
Every word I wrote put a smile on my face.

Oh, I laughed in this world, or I’d have lost my mind,
But sometimes those words, they cut deep and blind.
You’ll learn someday, old friend, it’s a cold, hard fate,
A coffin costs less than love lost, let’s clean this slate.

Better the blind man who goes out the window glass,
Than the joker who told him, “Just let that flow pass.”
Scratching my head, I’m thinking too hard,
Is it an itch, or pleasure? It’s a hit-or-miss card.
The grammar gets rusty, like morals in dust,
In Oklahoma where good and evil are both unjust.

A hundred kinds of deaths, they say, I hope yours is slow,
It might make you think twice before you ever let go.
But me, I just acted, no plan in my heart,
It’s easy to let those sharp words tear people apart.
You danced with the devil, now the devil laughs wide,
In the shadows of memory, where secrets still hide.

Oh, I laughed in this world, or I’d have lost my mind,
But sometimes those words, they cut deep and blind.
You’ll learn someday, old friend, it’s a cold, hard fate,
A coffin costs less than love lost, let’s clean this slate.

To the memories, and the love that we’ve lost,
If laughter’s our shield, we’ll pay any cost.
But in the end, my old friend, this truth resonates,
It’s a clean slate we seek, but the pain never waits.
