Christmas Mourning

On Christmas mourning, I take this pen
For those that I’ll not see again
In glow of tinseled Christmas trees
With smiles as wide as rolling seas

On Christmas mourning, I think once more
On longing for a sweet encore
Of Grandma’s much adored fruitcake
That took all day for her to make

When cancer, strokes and heart disease
Had not yet dimmed our Yule’s reprise
And youthful fancy ruled the day
With sounds of glee on full display

On Christmas mourning, I also know
I’m grateful that I’ll not outgrow
The memories I entertain
And share with loved ones that remain

Thank Kim, I know that many/most? folks don't like fruitcake and make fun of it but that's ONLY because they had never tasted my grandmothers!!! xxoo

Yes, Mike. Christmas becomes more bittersweet the older we get. Your words echo how I feel too and how much I miss family no longer with us. Well-done, and congratulations on your placement. Sandra

Mike, I love the simplistic way you described and co-joined the sadness with the joy of Christmas. Yours is, without a doubt the essence of what many of us feel at this time of year. Congratulations on your win, my friend!

Lovely verse Mike, Christmas is a happy time but we also look back with sadness at loved ones no longer with us. We remember the happy times we once shared with them. Good luck in the contest. Tom.
