Christmas In July

Six months since Christmas and people are down Trudging through life with a full facial frown Back in December we hoped it would snow But not a flake settled, well wouldn’t you know I remember thinking if it can’t be white Let’s have a Christmas that’s sunny and bright Move that joyous season to balmy July For Boxing Day sunbathing when we can fry Those Aussies have had it too good for too long To them a white Christmas would simply be wrong A dull, cloudy Christmas is Christmas gone flat But a Bognor like Bondi… I’ll have some of that If Christmas in Britain was moved to July We’d leave out ice cream for when Santa comes by But no doubt we Brits would find cause to complain It’s July in Britain… it’s still bound to rain 9 July 2022 Contest: Christmas In July Sponsor: Tania Kitchin Rhyme Checked by… ensuring words sound the same ;-)

Thank you, Paula. If I left out ice cream for Santa, my Annie would snaffle it. So, no, I doubt I’d get more gifts. ;-) Terry

Delightful in spirit with an uproar of fun. Wonder sense of humor Terry, especially the last line. Growing up in the northwest I wanted nothing more than to have a white Christmas. Sigh, was not to be. We had rain like you for the holidays! Congratulations on your win!

Thank you, Sam. I think I heard somewhere that in Britain, we get more white Easters than Christmases. Appreciate your comment. Terry

Nailed it Terry. Before I read the comments I was going to pick out the line "But a Bognor like Bondi.." as one that really had me smiling..then I noticed Tom had referred to it too. Great minds / Great line. I think this is a winner..I will add too though that high street shops are getting so desperate (sadly) that it won't be long before Christmas stuff starts appearing on the shelves around July anyway. Cheers - Gary

You’re right about the shops, Gary. In fact I’m given to believe that Harrods has a Christmas department all year round. As I intimated to Tom, only I could write about rainy Britain and then respond to your comment in a 30 odd degree heatwave! Glad you enjoyed the poem.

Typical, I write a poem about it raining in a British July… and it’s about 28 C outside. Glad to see the Turks let you go. Terry

Thanks, Gershon… I’m busily deciphering your comment… I’ve got it all figured but the 10-2-4 has me flummoxed. Ha ha… Terry

Thank you, Gina. We Brits love complaining about the weather. As somebody once said, ‘The rest of the world gets climate… Britain gets weather.’ Glad you enjoyed. Terry
