Christmas Day
Christmas Day
I’ve marked the calendar to count the days Fred
Christmas is barely a month ahead
I haven’t even begun to diet yet
Eating junk all year, how I sorely regret!
Dad stopped reading the paper and frowned
Christmas means expense, he hated the sound
Decorations and presents and parties to plan
Why November couldn’t just be followed by Jan?
Well I can’t possibly wear my old Christmas dress
Or perhaps a gown this year would show the rest
U know the ladies who live on our lane
Oh yes ..Dad laughed..they are all insane
Mother looked mad so dad was quick to say
No matter the clothes, you outshine them anyway
Good save Dad, I said with a grin
Smile mom it’s true , you’re still perfectly thin
Hey let’s not stay home and decorate this year
A holiday would surely bring on more cheer
All my friends brag about where they’ve been
Resorts and Hotels I’ve never seen
My grandmother suddenly had tears on her face
Her soft voice quavered it’s not about a place
Or presents or dresses, Gran said with dismay
It’s all about Jesus and Christmas day.
When the bells rang at midnight the night he was born
In the manger where the Star of Bethlehem shone
The whole world rejoices and the heavens too smile
Eternal peace and joy brought by this child
Mum‘s eyes filled with tears and she rushed to hug Gran
Dad too walked over and slowly took her hand
You are right Gran we said; it’s the most magical day
Let’s keep Christmas in our hearts forever more to stay.
