True story!
CHRISTMAS EVE 1929
These depression years had a sign —
the oval office gutted in the blaze,
short circuit of Christmas 1929.
Days before, President Hoover gave a speech
addressing the former service men and women —
a passionate touch for those out of reach.
Smoke poured out the upstairs room.
Firemen climb their laboring ladders
to save the white house from doom.
Papers burn, like yule logs as evening struck,
whilst the marine band sings carols to invited children.
The President, in seasonal reminder, gifts each child a toy fire truck.
