Notes About The Poem

For Nette Onclaud's SEVEN BY SEVEN Poetry Contest/ Jan. 2026

This very short poem for the contest of Nette Onclaud is based on the second memory I ever had of my childhood. I wrote of it in great depth if you want to see it at this link: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/at_the_shore_752271

Childhood Memory

I loved jumping waves on our
family vacations to
random seashores in my youth.
Once in my early childhood,
it was sunny as we drove;
then when we got to the beach . . .

clouds collected; the sky wept.

Ours was the long drivee to Grandparents where we stayed the summer. Instead of waves we had rows of peas to pick. Fun in the hot sun.

There is nothing quite as sad as expecting a sunshiny day at the beach and getting cloudy weather. Experienced this many summer days in the NW!!! Well done, my friend! Best wishes for the contest. Warm blessings for your winter day!

The poem is both original and excellent. Enjoying a day at the beach is great, but at times the weather takes a turn for the worse. The title is perfect, and the poem is superbly written.

Beach days are fun, but sometimes the rain gets the 'jump' on you..

This is a truly extraordinary reflection on a fond childhood memory, Andrea. The excellent twist in the last line is a reminder of the unexpected and its unwelcome upshot. Howard

Gone are the days when I used to swim every warm day. Lovely poem.

I just posted my poem for this contest. If this is true, the rain part, I bet everyone was let down and perhaps became cranky. I remember pretending to jump waves while really, I was just trying to remain upright. Enjoyed, Andrea
