Notes About The Poem

CHILDHOOD MEMORY

SEVEN BY SEVEN Poetry Contest
Nette Onclaud-1/24/26

The Midnight Sun draped its eyes,
as three young kids ran wayward
down the park road, like Vikings.
The fjord was in the balance,
a canoe, dad's cigarettes.
The nicotine rush stopped short.

A drunk driver took two lives.

Andrea, thank you for the cup of tea. I like line #1. It's like the Midnight Sun draped its eyes because it could see what was unfolding.

Andrea, thank you for the cup of tea. My strawberry fields of a childhood (11 at the time) had some monsters in the shadows. By exposing those monsters in this poem, I feel a little better because no one knows of this story. When my parents asked about the deaths, I suppressed the truth, like I have for over the past 50 years. The ship has now left the harbor. Regarding the blog, I'm delighted to hear a strong voice for what is right.
