Charming Billy, Billy Bonney
He shot a man in Arizona
so Billy's riding hard tonight.
He had to leave Fort Grant City
because he killed a bully in broad daylight.
Billy's heading back from where he came from,
back to old New Mexico.
He has friends on the Ruidoso.
They'll hide him out where ever he goes.
Charming Billy, Billy Bonney.
You just turned seventeen
but your future will be seen
as Billy the Kid.
Billy joined up with The Regulators
as the Lincoln County War began.
He was a small young boy with a big sombrero,
but rough and tough as any man.
Billy earned his reputation
with a friendly smile and a smoking gun.
The Spanish girls all loved young Billy.
Their blue eyed hero he had become
Charming Billy, Billy Bonney.
You loved to dance and sing
and never worry about a thing.
Pat Garrett was hired to catch young Billy.
A one time friend he knew him well.
Pat cornered Billy in a rock house cabin
near Stinking Springs as folks do tell.
Sentenced to hang in the town of Lincoln,
Billy made his bold escape.
Both his guards died from thinking
that a shackled young boy couldn't break away.
Charming Billy, Billy Bonney.
The whole world knows your name.
You've caught up to your fame.
Billy could have kept his freedom
by riding off to Mexico,
but he wanted his friends and senoritas,
so to Fort Sumner he did go.
Just about the stroke of midnight
a shot rang out in a darkened room.
Pat Garrett's bullet killed young Billy.
His short life ended years too soon.
Charming Billy, Billy Bonney.
You just turned twenty one
at the wrong end of a gun.
