Changing of the Guard

When your children are very small
You protect them from their fears
You tell them bedtime stories
Throughout their early years

You share their pain and heartaches
Each day you watch them grow
You celebrate their victories
As they strive to reach their goals

You warn them of the dangers
That life can bring their way
And many of life's temptations
That could cause them to stray

You watch them meet that someone
Who forever steals their heart
Even tho you share their time
You're never far apart

You welcome your first grandchild
As your child becomes a man
The pride you feel is magical
As you reach to take his hand

You're no longer his protecter
You knew this would be hard
You pass the reins of parenthood
It's the changing of the guard
