Changing Conversations

Conversation’s bound to change As aging takes its toll, For when you meet with friends, Exchanging stories is the goal. So politics may be discussed Or movies, books or shows Or travel or the grandkids; That’s the way it always goes. Except that something else now comes To take up center stage - The ailments that we deal with And those battles that we wage: The brittle bones that lead to falls, With MRI’s and slings; The joint replacements, followed by PT with all that brings. The medications, bloodwork, The procedures and the fears That this is just the start of Never-ending “golden” years. No longer do we talk of Wilder days of smoke and wine. I guess that’s what’s expected When you go to bed by nine!

Brilliant, Ilene. I’ve thus far avoided most of the pitfalls of aging (I’m gonna regret saying that). That said, I do make that funny sound when I get out of a chair…. But that’s compulsory. Thanks for filling my vision of the future with so much to look forward to… call yourself a friend… huh ;-)

Ha ha… I’ve heard that ‘Oy’ used in many sitcoms etc. I’ve always taken it to mean anything from, ‘So there’ to ‘So who would have guessed’ all of which clearly encompasses ‘That’s life’. Isn’t language a wonderful thing!

thanks, terry! it's interesting to me how everyone ages differently, but even though none of my friends really seems "old" to me, our conversations do revolve around health issues way too much of the time. there's one perfect yiddish word for this - oy! (if you don't know it, look it up - it's a great word to use for all kinds of situations...)

Ilene, I REALLY love thie poem~~not just because it is really good, but because it resonates with me so strongly. I still get together with lifelong friends. Much of our conversations center around who's going under the knife next!! Janice

ha! before i retired, i had to get up before 5 a.m. in order to commute to work, so i got used to that schedule and i have stayed a morning person. glad you're able to stay up later, anne-lise - i think more people are like you than like me...

Dear Ilene, You beautifully inked the shift in dialogue that comes with aging. I love how your clever rhymes and relatable observations make this piece both entertaining and touching. It's a wonderful reflection on the realities of growing older, balanced with a touch of wry humor. Very Witty! Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel
