Champions Are Made
My disadvantage becomes my weapon
when my failures teach me lessons
Some choose fear and show aggression
criticism too upsetting
I played cricket as a kid
good enough to play with men
Knowing less as I did
listening to all of them
Knowledge they all had to offer
admitting they knew better
If I was too proud to bother
I’d get worse not better
If I had made less effort
If I thought I was gifted
Or naturally blessed at sport ...
team sheets without me listed
I had to look up to move that way
Get things wrong and learn to play
Face mistakes that I had made
Conquer fear by being brave
Embarrassed but I carried on
Learning what I had done wrong
Not embarrassed though for long
Learn it and it’s always gone
As I became older and youngsters came to me
I could see the strongest minds differ from the weak
Those who could not swallow pride deluded in defeat
strong minds listening would rise to victory most sweet
Admitting that they didn’t know
made them into winners
Even those a little slow
can now teach the beginners
Whilst those so good they went alone
got worse before they quit
Disappointment all they’ve known
remembered now as sh....
If I was a know-it-all or believed myself established
ability I had would fall until the day it vanished
If I believed it was all me and that is why I’m great
Respect for me as a person would evaporate
Criticism is a blessing
don’t find it insulting
accepting it means never guessing
improvements keep resulting
Don’t forget you didn’t know
Someone had to show you
Is it help that you now show
Teach them something new
