Celebration

Happy Birthday
my darling dear
yesterday
isn’t quite so clear
blurring candlelight
and candy sprinkle scents
this manufactured card
is all that you get

the bright colored wrappings
boxes full of hope
shaking their contents
originality is remote
staring blank faces
masked envy a disguise
smiles are offered
a ruined surprise

hope memory will return
before the sun sets
regret what I’ve missed
and what I forget
may the sun shine down
on your garden party
with aging certain
and a silent parting
