Carpe Diem

Glued to my desk I glumly sighed
For lack of inspiration.
Growing ‘ennui’ I could not hide,
Outside – precipitation!

Out of my window as I gazed
A squirrel stood and shivered.
Under a lilac brolly raised
This message he delivered:

‘Gather ye acorns while ye may
For winter is advancing
Harvest the fruits of life today
Good luck do not be chancing!’

Vision now gone, I burst the chain
Of routine, mundane hours,
And felt the joy of life again
Refreshed by gentle showers.

"Out of my window as I gazed A squirrel stood and shivered" - so vividly realistic picture painting. Congratulations!

Love this, Wendy. Especially during our stay-at-home lockdown when it is so easy to just see the world through the window as spring is bursting at the seams outside! I wasn't aware of the 'Carpe Diem' poetry form and am glad to be enlightened. I think I'll be changing one or two of my previous poems to this form. Congratulations on your win today for this uplifting message, delivered with your unique flair ~ John

Thanks,John. Lovely to hear from you with your usual interesting comments. I hope people who weren't aware of the contest don't think I'm going nuts!! This was written to a pictorial prompt of a squirrel holding a purple umbrella in the rain!

Definitely true to the form. I can imagine the others at nearby desks looking at each other as the author goes running through the rain. I really enjoyed reading this.

That's so kind of you Jesse. As you can tell, the squirrel had also clued up on Robert Herrick's poetry!

The inspiration came to me as I sat wondering which of the pictures to choose and a cheeky squirrel came right up to the window and stared at me. We are used to watching their antics in the garden but I took it as a sign!!Thank you for your encouragement, Chris.
