Carousel
Hear the Calliope
see the spinning colors
of a magical kaleidoscope
a fantasy journey that
lights up an August night
painted horses with rouged
lips and golden bridles
smile and prance
pink roses adorn their saddles
where wide eyed children
with sticky sweaty hands
clasp reins and silver poles
kicking the flanks with Woolworth's
sandals
faster and faster
in a blur of twinkling lights
wind blowing hair ribbons
amid squeals of delight
aroma of candy apples
caramel corn
flashes of ferris wheel and
tilt a whirl
through the night sky they fly
all too soon it is over
slower, slower
as anxious parents lift giggling
offspring down from
their high horses
who wink and
wait for the music to start
again and again
until the carnival shuts down
and moves on...
