Caroline, My Lovely Daughter

Caroline, my lovely daughter,
You came to me like early light,
The kind that slips into a room
And asks for nothing but to be.

You are the meeting of two lives,
A kindness shaped by time and care;
I see both love and gentleness
In how you move the open air.

I only wish to walk beside
The days that are still coming true,
To notice all the little things
That quietly belong to you.

You love the earth, the birds, the small
And watchful creatures passing through;
In how you tend the living world
I recognize a part of you—
And maybe, softly, part of me.

If you would like, introduce
The friend who’s known your steady years;
I’d like to meet the life you’ve made,
Without regret, without old fears.

I still hold warmth for your mother—
Some loves remain without a name;
They do not press upon the present,
They simply keep a steady flame.

Thank you for being who you are,
For letting life unfold its way;
I’m grateful just to call you mine,
And walk with you, one gentle day.

This is touching, James. I felt my eyes mist.
