Carolina Wren

I love the birds that make their home in Florida… The woodpeckers, doves and cardinals who live just beyond our front door… The pelicans, herons and spoonbills we see on our walks along the shore. And when we get to Florida…it does’t matter when…. I love how we are greeted every morning…by the Carolina wren. The Carolina wren is a tiny bird in its size and in its shape each one weighs around 20 grams…about the same weight as 4 grapes. Despite their tiny size…seeing them is a surprise… A blend of rust, cinnamon, yellow, brown and pink… with those white stripes over their eyes. If you are lucky enough to see one…it will most likely be on the ground… because, although Carolina wrens can fly, they prefer to hop around. But don’t be sad if you never see one jumping and hopping along because even if you cannot see them…you cannot miss their song. They sing in voices clear and loud… you hear their song carried on the breeze Who knew such a small bird’s song could ricochet through the mountains and echo off the trees Oftentimes they sing solo…but sometime, if we’re lucky, they sing a duet either way…it’s a song we cannot miss…and one we will never forget. So here’s a shout out to Carolina wrens a truly beautiful and captivating bird… Who create one of the best ways to wake up in the mountains… that we have ever heard.
