Cardinal

Red brilliance against a backdrop of snow
cardinal hops looking for food. I press
my nose against window and watch
                    bathed in the morning glow.
Bare branches wave in southerly breeze.
Soft breeze plays a hopeful song,
                    my waking call for spring.
