Can'T Take My Pride

Days until ‘Pride’ fast approaching,
On the phone with mom, she said;
Not to make myself a target by going,
That she doesn’t wish her daughter dead.

Better yet, stay home, she insists,
Everyone that goes is at risk.

As if I should hide who I am inside…

Truly, I understand her warranted concerns,
All the same; the event, for me, isn’t ruined,
Realistically, the fact makes some people spurn,
Gay, perhaps no different, I’m invariably human,
Eventually, everyone will understand and discern,
Then I won’t have to live a suppressing illusion.

Honestly, I didn’t take moment to decide,
Only the one answer buzzed in my ear,
No, I won’t sit by with anxiety and hide,
Especially so, I won’t give my all to this fear,
You can take my life, but you can’t take my pride.

Hello Briauna, You may be the first person I've ever known with that name. Briauna is a girl or boy's name meaning "high, noble, exalted". You're making a better world when you share your heart through honest poetry. Someone will read this and take comfort from your resounding message someday. I like this clever Acrostic, reluctant to ever be a target. -Richard

Your Mom has a good point. You do, too. As for me, I am truly glad not to be in the shoes of either of you. I can only imagine how difficult those shoes are to walk in.... Very well-penned, Briauna. You have laid out the battle lines here,... and your last line---so bittersweet. Best wishes, Gershon

With Trump as our racist leader, it is Open Season on anyone for any reason, church in the morning, night club at night, or asleep in your own bed. The USA desperately needs a President who unites, knowing we are all in this world together! Aloha! Rico
