By Your Side

Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall,
tomorrow you won't even be able to hear my call.
As your fear grows and you try to hide,
I'll be here, right by your side.

As you become frail and brittle as a bird,
I'll be here, to listen to your every word.
When the pain is here, put your hand in my palm,
I'll hold it all night, til your calm.

As I sat with you, reminiscing the past,
the doctor said, “sorry its spreading too fast.”
I gather myself, as I stare at the tile,
then look at you, and on your face is a smile.

In that moment, I see you are so strong,
then you say, “its with God I belong.”
I try my hardest to hold back my tears,
but its you, who chased away my fears.

One morning, I woke up so my day could start.
I called your name, I got a broken heart.
I was with you the whole time, by your side.
So I know it was peaceful, when you died.
