Butterfly Ice Cream
Little children all around me
I can't catch my breath.
Little eyes all trained on me
and I'm scared half to death.
Suddenly it seems to me
by stage fright I've been bitten.
The only reason I am here
is to read some poems I've written.
Still I sense the gravity
of the words I choose to say.
One day one of them might stand
right where I stand today.
Reading poems they one time wrote
of butterfly ice cream.
Or maybe of a prince somewhere
they met in a dream.
It's up to me this moment
to nudge and to inspire.
Then step aside for poetry
to take them even higher.
Raising up the bar it seems
for some distant lonely night.
When they too find some comfort
in the words they someday write.
Thank You for this chance Dear Lord
and believing I could do it.
Now Lord it's all up to You
to somehow help me through it.
