Butterfly
A moth drawn to the
ethereal light
exuded by a lucky few
like you
to escape eternal night
I singed my wings
dreaming of brighter things
better days I’d been told
were destined to dawn for me
but never did
Fairytale fictions
of fancy dress balls
Dancing in palaces with princes
Finding my one true love
who would never leave me
like all the others
shattering my soul
Grinding the pieces into powder
under their heels for good measure
Burnt and broken
covered in soot
I struggle to soar
an insect Icarus
spiraling
plummeting
to the porch floor
to be swept away with all the others
who aimed too high
believed the lie
thought they could be something more
Who dared to try
to be a butterfly
