But Not Very Long

She'd resist cowboys, but not very long
One would come ridin' and singin' a song

Then she'd forget the agony they bring
Her eyes would light up and she'd start to sing

But she'd be careful to not fall in love -
'Least not right away if push came to shove

She loved the life and the men who live it
And she loved the thrill and those who give it

But, Lord, they're an unpredictable lot
He would love ropin' as likely as not

He'd never tell her what was on his mind
She'd have to guess at a dream of some kind

So she'd saddle up and ride right along
With the young cowboy who sang her a song

Now she is old and she rocks in her chair
The one she married is around somewhere

She's smiling softly as she hums their song
She'd resisted that cowboy, but not very long.
