Bush Cat Killers

BUSH CAT KILLERS

Lions hunt anything,
They hunt all the while,
They approach their prey,
With incredible guile.
Their plan is strategy,
When they attack,
And like a squadron of
Soldiers surround their
Prey in a pack.
Lions have a reliable nose,
And with their sharp hearing,
This leads to a kill,
And the whole pride
Will enjoy their fill.
Their young are taught to stalk
With co-ordinated precision,
And together one day,
Will form a formidable coalition.
Their stealth and power,
Is a fearsome might,
They have spotted their,
Their kill,
And execute at their will,
Under the cover of night!
Often, opportunity
Knocks at their door,
As an old exhausted
Elephant falls at their feet,
On a stony river bank floor,
And provides an abundance
Of food, attracting drifters,
Like a crocodile!
Lion and crocodile stick to their
Boundaries In an uneasy truce,
Until the territorial
Hippos appear
And come near,
And the Lions then run,
Churning river sand loose!
They leave the elephant carcass
In the lost and found,
Swiftly running for
Higher ground!
It’s time for them to not
Be a hero,
As one hippo bite,
Can zip them to zero!

Beautiful, regal creatures. Re my comment on your Elephant's Ghost poem, where I referred to Lions... I was moritified when I learnt of this...this guy should have all his teeth pulled and castrated, then locked away ... in my humble opinion. Great poem above. Leanne

I have always loved lions, they are so very powerful and are totally vicious--nothing cuddly about them. Nature made them to be killing machines , to survive.. Great poem my dear friend.. Merry Christmas and blessed holidays to you and yours my dear friend.. A fav...

Hi Robert, A Lion is the king of the jungle, and his reputation of king as well as killer precedes him. And yet there are true stories of people and lions who have survived a long relationship together. Thank-you for a lovely comment Robert, God Bless, Jennifer.

I feel like I have been transported to the river bank. You have the ability to "paint" with your words. Really something special.

Thank-you Duke, you comment so gently and meaningfully! In fact I illustrate most of my poems by sketching in cartoon style and will shortly be going back and attaching an illustration to each poem. Festive wishes to you and yours.

HI ki, You know how I love my wild life. Did you know that when Elias was much younger he wanted to be a parks game ranger? He instilled the love of the Park in me. Thank-you for commenting, Jenny.

Wow, thanks for taking us on the prowl with your lion. And look how their success in the hunt can change so quickly, Jennifer. Loved reading this! Best wishes for the holidays, Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, The lions will go for a baby hippo, but never their mum, depending of course on their numbers, but I've never seen or heard of this. The same with a baby elephant, for elephant babies are very inquisitive and tend to wander away too far from from mom and nannies, and that's when they are nabbed! But we seen a pride of lions bring down a lone buffalo, they actually jump onto his back, and another grabs the loose skin around his neck and the rest start eating whilst he is dying. Real carnivores, but this is what they are, wild animals! thank-you for a meaningful comment. love and hugs, Jennifer

MGM has it right by showing the lioness as the big cheese, i.e., the lioness gets the kill but allows the lion to feed on it instead of her offspring. Lions are most brutal when mating, not a great image for, "King of the Jungle"! Another great write, Jennifer! Aloha! Rico

Hi Rico, And male lions even kill all the male cubs when they take over a pride, maybe because they want only their own genes to continue and also they are afraid a younger one will one day take over his pride. Wild life is cruel. You must see them chase and bring down a giraffe, very sad. Thank you Rico for the comment and very glad you enjoyed! Yasou, Jennifer.
