Bus Ride To Friendship

She was just an older lady who I so little knew, Though people laughed at her, nothing did she do. She'd go on about her business with not even caring, While others made fun of the clothes she was wearing. When she needed to get off the bus at the next stop, Others tried to trip her, make her things drop. I couldn't stand the cruelty this lady had to bear And inside me grew much anger, empathy, and despair. The next day I watched for her as I saved for her a seat For I vowed to myself the day before would not again, repeat. When she came onto the bus, I invited her to sit Next to me knowing the others would then mock me too, a bit. Somehow, it didn't matter, their words being directed Cruelly at me as I was then too another one rejected. We talked and got to know each other the length of her ride And that day I made a friend so beautiful inside. We made plans to meet for coffee later on in the eve, As we tuned out the bullies who wished for us to grieve. It was the start of a friendship that lasted twenty years And we laughed and cried together through both and many tears. She has gone to Heaven now and how I miss her presence here. Who'd have ever thought that on a bus ride, I'd meet one so dear. She'll be forever in my thoughts, forever in my heart And in heaven there are no bullies to keep her set apart. My dear friend, Arlene, this one's for you. Thanks for being my friend, always so true! The animals you treasured, your entire crew, Are I'm sure in Heaven right there with you. 2018-04-22 14:03:00 (EDT) Written for 'NEW POEMS ONLY - 2 - Poetry Contest' Sponsored by Emile Pinet

what a touching and heartfelt story, sharon! how wonderful that your kindness paid off with a dear friendship, something those mean people will never be able to understand...

Thank you, Ilene. I agree. It's too bad really that people who are mean to others can't see how 'they' paint their own portrait, showing just how miserable 'they' are. All the best to you. :) ~ Artsie

Thank you, Cassandra. We surely do. A stranger is a friend we have yet to meet, if we show them respect as and when we greet. All the best to you. :) ~ Artsie

I have a huge lump in my throat Artsie what a touching story. Your kindness shown to her on the bus was something she will never have forgotten and it was the start of a fabulous friendship which lasted for so many years. You must miss her so much :-( hugs Jan xx

Thank you, Jan. Yes, it was a fabulous friendship & she loved animals & nature like I do. I'll always miss her. In life there are many who walk in & out of our lives with just a trace of themselves left with us. But then there are those who leave lasting, indelible prints we never can erase & we are enriched. All the best to you my friend. :) hugs ~ Artsie xx

Thank you, Susan. I found a beautiful heart in her when I chose to look beneath the surface and seek within her rose. My reward was her wonderful friendship and in my book, it's a reward that's priceless and matchless. All the best to you. :) ~ Artsie

Beautiful poem, Artsieladie, GL with contest. Alleluia! "in heaven there are no bullies". WHY in the world are people so cruel... I used to think Hitler was the ultimate evil. But there's a little Hitler in the hearts of many people... thankfully many choose to starve him and have him die off as they wisen up and fill their hearts with more kindness.

Thank you, Line. Yes, Alleluia! I ask myself that question nearly every day, why are people so cruel, heartless, & mean & for no reason!? When called out on their behaviour, they blame everything/everyone else but themselves, instead of taking responsibility & being accountable for their behaviour & they complain about the sad state of the world not seeing they're part of the problem. All the best to you. :) ~ Artsie
